Yoppy Pieter
Yoppy Pieter is a visual storyteller, educator, and independent curator based in Jakarta. Through his lens, he explores the deeper layers of identity, gender, environmental conservation, and health – subjects that he approaches with an intimate and empathetic gaze.
His journey began with a photography workshop held by the PannaFoto Institute, which gradually opened doors to international opportunities. In 2015, he was awarded the Erasmus Huis Fellowship and completed a residency at NOOR Images in Amsterdam. Two years later, he was selected for the 6×6 Global Talent Program by the World Press Photo Foundation, and in 2019, he became the first Indonesian to join the prestigious Joop Swart Masterclass, a significant milestone in his career. Most recently, in 2023, he was named a National Geographic Explorer and received a grant from the National Geographic Society.
His work has been exhibited in numerous shows, including the Jakarta Photo Summit, Jakarta Biennale, Mt. Rokko International Photo Festival, and the SPECTROSYNTHESIS II exhibition. In 2016, he published Saujana Sumpu, a photobook that quietly yet powerfully captures landscapes and memory.
But Yoppy’s storytelling extends beyond images. In 2018, he co-founded Arkademy, a learning platform created to encourage photography as a tool for introspection and social critique. He also launched Heterogenic, an Instagram-based platform that celebrates diversity and creates space for underrepresented voices in Indonesian photography. In addition to his creative work, he frequently teaches visual storytelling at PannaFoto Institute, continuing his commitment to nurturing emerging talents and critical visual culture.
