Under the Fringe program, organizations or communities have the opportunity to create their own events at JIPFest. From the open registration, which took place from 13-31 July, nine organizations have been selected to present their events in the festival. Here’s the list of Fringe participants and their events:
Photo Exhibition: The Grassroots’ Pandemic

The Covid pandemic has taken a toll on everyone’s lives, but some people suffer the most. As shown in many cases, vulnerable and marginalized people paddle along this pandemic in the most fragile way possible. In this photo exhibition, 12 photographers tell stories of the ordinary people’s daily struggles during two years of pandemic in different corners of Indonesia. This project was initiated by the Kurawal Foundation.

Constructing Photography in Formal Education

Brian Arnold found his interest in Indonesia in 1992, and photography has always been a large part of how he engages his travels and studies. In this session, he will explore a personal narrative about an American who discovered Bali and Java. The program is hosted by Afterhours Books, the publisher of Arnold’s latest book, titled A History of Photography in Indonesia: From the Colonial Era to the Digital Age.

Photo Presentation: Stories from the East

As part of the Photo-Demos initiative, which was started in 2020, PannaFoto Institute and Kurawal Foundation hosted a photography workshop dedicated to photographers and photography enthusiasts in Eastern Indonesia. Three of the participants—from Jayapura, Ternate and Palu—will share stories through photos they produced during the workshop in August 2022.
