On 10 January 2019, the Jakarta International Photo Festival (JIPFest) 2019 officially opens its doors for photographers to submit their works. This invitation is valid for photographers of any nationality, aged 18 years or older. JIPFest welcomes photography and multimedia projects that are made in a diverse visual storytelling approach, including documentary, photojournalism and art projects. Each work must be in line with the festival’s theme—Identity. All submissions will be selected and curated by a curatorial team consisting of Firman Ichsan, Jenny Smets, and Ahmad ‘Deny’ Salman. For its debut, the Jakarta International Photo Festival (JIPFest) features three curators with deep experiences in photography festivals. Collectively, they will curate all photo submissions under the festival’s theme—Identity. Firman Ichsan takes the Head Curator seat. He is the founder of Oktagon Visual Education & Culture Development Foundation, and was the Chairman of the Jakarta Arts Council (2009-2012) and the Executive Director of Jakarta Biennale 2009. For the first time, Jakarta is going to have an international photography festival. The Jakarta International Photo Festival (JIPFest) will involve more than 50 international stakeholders, including photographers, photo editors, scholars, curators, critics, galleries and photography organizations and enthusiasts. Inaugurated on November 10, 1968, Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) was the first modern cultural center in Indonesia. The eight-hectare complex is named after Ismail Marzuki, one of the country’s most celebrated composers. TIM has three theaters, two exhibition halls, two outdoor multifunction areas, a library and a cinema. As a modern cultural center, TIM is complemented by a curatorial body (the Jakarta Arts Council), an art college (the Jakarta Institute of Arts), and a think tank (the Jakarta Academy).
